Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be in Brazil to get a CPF?

No. A CPF can be requested remotely through a Brazilian consulate or an authorised channel while you are still abroad. We also complete it in person in Curitiba if you prefer to do it on arrival.

What is a CPF used for?

The CPF is Brazil's individual taxpayer number and is required for almost everything: opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, buying property, getting a phone line and completing residency formalities.

Can a non-resident foreigner hold a CPF?

Yes. Non-residents can obtain a CPF, which is common for people who want to invest or buy property in Brazil before relocating.

Will my documents need translation?

Some civil documents such as birth or marriage certificates may need an apostille and a sworn translation. We tell you exactly what applies and can arrange the apostille and cartorio steps for you.

Is the CPF the same as a visa or residency?

No. The CPF is only a tax identification number and does not grant any immigration status. We support your residency separately, alongside licensed Brazilian attorneys (OAB) where legal counsel is required.
